Care Tire Pressure: Adding Air to Tires

If you’re putting air in your tires, you’ll need to know the specific psi for your front and rear tires, have a tire gauge, and have access to an air pump. You can find the psi requirements in your owner’s manual or on the bottom of the doorframe on the driver’s side of your vehicle. Gauges are also inexpensive, and portable air pumps often have built-in air gauges.

Many people have air pumps in their garage or they buy a rechargeable or plug-in portable air pump online. Just keep in mind that portable chargers can vary, and they’re not one-size-fits-all options. If you drive a truck or SUV, we don’t recommend everyday portable air pumps and instead recommend looking for specialized portable options for larger vehicles if you want a portable air pump. Here are the simple steps on how to fill tires with air once you know your tires’ psi:

  • Make sure that all of your tires are within reach of the air hose/pump.
  • Remove the cap from the tire valve on the first tire you’re filling and use your tire gauge to see its current psi.
  • Remove the gauge and place the air hose nozzle piece directly over the tire valve and press down firmly enough on the nozzle onto the tire valve. You should hear the tire being filled with air. If it’s very loud, you probably don’t have the nozzle directly over the tire valve, and you can easily take it off and readjust.
  • Let the tire fill for a few seconds and then remove the nozzle. Use your tire gauge again to check the psi.
  • Continue this process until the gauge reads the correct psi.
  • Repeat for every tire on your vehicle.

This process can vary if you’re using portable air pumps, but the main process remains the same. Just check your air pump’s instructions for more specific information.

If you add too much air, you can press the pin on the tire valve with the back of the air hose nozzle or use the small knob on the back of the rounded end of the tire gauge to let loose some air. Check the psi as you would when filling your tire until it’s the correct psi.

How Much Air Should You Put in Your Tires?

How much air should you really put in your tires? Check your owner’s manual or on the bottom of the driver side’s doorframe for your make and model’s information. You’ll most likely have to open your driver’s side to be able to see the psi information on the bottom of the doorframe.

We also recommend these tips when filling your tires and considering car tire pressure:

  • Don’t inflate your tires to the psi given on the actual tire. That number is the maximum psi your tire can hold, not the recommended psi.
  • If your ride feels very bouncy, slightly off, and your car is harder to handle, you’ve overinflated your tires. Check the recommended psi again and the actual psi of your tires.
  • Underinflated tires can lead to faster tire wear and tear on your tires, and you want to make sure that you check your tires’ psi levels every now and then.
